Scheduling

When preparing to teach a combination class, scheduling is one of the most important and potentially difficult things you’ll need to figure out. Often, there are many other required times that you have to work around. Fill in these inflexible times into a daily or weekly schedule, then you can work in your subject blocks.

First, find out times for:
  • Lunch
  • Recess(es)
  • Classroom Aide time
  • Pull-out times
    • Title 1 Reading or Math
    • Music, Art, etc.
    • Resource & Special Ed.
  • Assigned or Shared times
    • Gym, Computer Lab, etc
Then add Subject blocks:
  • Math
  • Language Arts
  • Science
  • History & Social Science

Remember to be flexible. You may need to alternate grade-level subjects. Look at the samples to see ways in which other teachers have worked out their multigrade class schedules.
